Cardiovascular disease and hormonal replacement therapy.
One of the major fears associated with estrogen replacement is breast or uterine cancer, but about twice as many women die from heart disease than who die from all forms of cancer. Women who can't produce estrogen are at the highest risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease
There were approximately 350,000 deaths a year from cardiovascular causes, as opposed to 160,000 deaths a year from all forms of cancer, including lung cancer which is primarily caused by cigarette smoking.(1995-6)
The headlines have been filled over the last few years with negative story after negative story about Hormone Replacement Therapy. All the studies behind these headlines have been done using synthetic estrogens and a synthetic form of progesterone called a "progestin". Contrary to what drug companies and the conventional medical community believed, there was actually more danger from cardiovascular disease in women who took this combination therapy, the brand name of which is "Prempro". It is believed that the primary culprit in this effect is the progestin, medroxyprogesterone. It is an example of how drug companies manipulate the naturally occurring molecule, progesterone, into a patentable product. The medroxyprogesterone has some of the effects of progesterone, but because it is not structurally identical to progesterone, it has unintended side effects, and also can block the effects and decrease the levels of the real progesterone in the body. One of the main problems with the medroxyprogesterone is that if you do have a heart attack, it causes coronary spasms, which greatly increase the chance of dying from the heart attack, rather than surviving. The bio-identical progesterone does not have these negative effects, which has been shown in various studies. ( see natural micronized progesterone ). |
