Horse urine estrogen - why did we even consider using it?
The original reason for using horse urine estrogen was that many years ago there was not a readily available source of estrogens, so a drug company used horse urine. This reason no longer exists.
The process required for horse urine is that mares are impregnated and forced to stand in a small stall so the urine can be collected. This is not how horses were meant to be treated. Many of the colts resulting from this process are shipped off for slaughter.
Conjugated horse urine estrogen ( brand name Premarin® ) contains a large portion of drug that is equine in nature. This means that it contains horse estrogen, which works great for horses, but plays no normal role in human estrogen replacement.
Most of the conjugated estrogen is converted into estrone, and we know that estrone is the estrogen which feeds estrogen-dependent breast cancers and can build up the lining of the uterus.
Over 40% of all patients who are started on horse urine estrogen stop the therapy after 6 months because of unwanted side effects.
Safer, more humane forms of estrogen are available, and we believe that there is no reason whatsoever to use horse urine to treat a human condition.
