Bio-identical Hormone HRT - Women
Osteoporosis prevention involves more than just hormonal replacement

The prevention of osteoporosis needs to consist of a lifestyle modification, nutritional supplementation, and proper, intelligent hormonal replacement.  The very best results obtained by any study involved the use of estrogen, progesterone, and the nutrients listed below.

  • Osteoporosis is the indirect cause of death for hundreds of thousands of people each year, and most of these can be prevented.
  • Over 1.3 million women suffer fractures each year as a result of osteoporosis.
  • As many as 20% of individuals who suffer a hip fracture die within one year, usually as a result of complications.
  • Over 50% of those who fracture their hips end up in nursing homes.

  • Preventing fractures requires at least three factors:
    1. Preventing loss of calcium from the bones.
    2. Maintaining the soft tissue portion of the bones.
    3. Proper hormonal replacement.

The important nutrients needed to prevent osteoporosis:
    1. Vitamin K
    2. Manganese
    3. Magnesium
    4. Folic acid
    5. Vitamin B-6
    6. Folic Acid
    7. Strontium, Copper,Silicon
    8. Vitamin C, vitamin D
    9. Calcium

    Estrogen
    A. Reduces osteoporosis-related fractures by as much as 50%.  Although estrogen can reduce bone loss, it can not build back bone which has already been lost.
    (see progesterone)
    B. Estrogen therapy must be started early and continued indefinitely, because when estrogen therapy is stopped, bone loss will occur at an accelerated rate.
    C. Estriol seems to be the safest estrogen to use.  Estriol has never been shown to cause endometrial hyperplasia, is non-carcinogenic, and may even inhibit breast cancer.
    D. Estriol only very rarely causes post-menopausal vaginal bleeding.
    E. A study published in 1985 showed that estriol is capable of preventing osteoporosis.

    Progesterone
    A. Progesterone is much safer than estrogen and may by itself prevent osteoporosis, but the best results are found when a proper balance of the hormones is reached.
    B. A study published in the medical journal Lancet showed that progesterone was effective in reversing osteoporosis.

Many physicians have a compounding pharmacy combine the natural estrogens with natural progesterone for hormonal replacement and osteoporosis prevention.  A very good source of information regarding osteoporosis is a book written by Dr Alan Gaby called Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis.  It is available at most book stores in paperback or can be ordered by your favorite book store.
