Non-hormonal relief of hot flashes-
Several supplements have been shown to be effective for many patients who suffer from hot flashes. It is important to note that the phytoestrogens have never been shown to provide any benefit other than relief of hot flashes, and will not even do that for all women. The following should be considered by women who are unable to get complete relief from hormonal replacement therapy or for those who opt not to take hormones.
1. Calcium (in the form of calcium citrate) and magnesium. Current recommendations are to use 1200 to 1500mg of calcium along with about 500mg of magnesium. These minerals are also important for bones, cardiovascular health, and prevention of colon disorders.
2. A good natural vitamin E supplement at 400 to 1000 units per day.
3. A source of essential fatty acids, such as organic flaxseed oil or fish oil. Be careful to get a good brand of fish oil, since some brands have been shown to have mercury, and also may turn rancid.
4. A phytoestrogen, such as black cohosh or a standardized extract of soy containing the phytoestrogens. |
